As the seasons shift, so too do our travel plans.
Whether you're planning a final escape to the sun or preparing for a new season of work trips, the challenge of packing light remains.
A few years ago, I started working with a new client, Sarah, a brilliant marketing executive who was constantly on the move. She was overwhelmed by the thought of packing for back-to-back business trips and felt she was constantly buying new clothes for each destination, leading to a wardrobe full of mismatched pieces. Her goal was to streamline her packing, feel confident in her choices, and save time and money.
Together, we crafted a system based on the capsule wardrobe concept, building a collection of versatile, high-quality pieces that could be mixed and matched for any occasion. The result? She now packs for a week-long business trip in just a carry-on and feels chic and polished no matter where her work takes her.
Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, the secret to a stress-free journey is a well-planned travel capsule. Instead of overpacking, you can build a small, curated collection of pieces that work hard for you. This means more time enjoying your trip and less time worrying about what to wear.
My 50/40/10 Rule for Smart Packing
My go-to method for creating a versatile travel wardrobe is the 50/40/10 rule. This simple framework ensures you have the right balance of essentials, personality pieces, and accessories, no matter your destination.
- 50% Foundational Neutrals: These are the workhorses of your travel wardrobe. They are classic, high-quality pieces in neutral colours like black, navy, beige, white, or grey that can be paired with almost anything. Think of them as the canvas for your looks.
- 40% Seasonal & Statement Pieces: This is where you inject personality and adapt to your destination's climate and style. These pieces can be in vibrant colours, bold prints, or unique textures
- 10% Accessories: The small but mighty details that transform an outfit. Accessories can completely change the feel of a look without taking up much space in your bag.
Your 10-Piece Capsule Wardrobe Formula
Let's apply the 50/40/10 rule to create a practical, 10-piece travel capsule.
This formula is perfect for a long weekend, but can be easily expanded for longer trips.
50% Neutrals (5 pieces):
- Two bottoms: A versatile pair of trousers and a skirt or a pair of jeans.
- Two neutral tops: A classic t-shirt and a sophisticated camisole or blouse.
- One lightweight jacket: A blazer, trench coat, or denim jacket.
40% Seasonal & Statement Pieces (4 pieces):
- One statement top: A colourful blouse, a patterned knit, or a unique silk shirt.
- One versatile dress: A dress that can be styled up for dinner or worn casually during the day.
- One smart top/shirt: A piece that elevates your look for a meeting or a nicer dinner.
- One light knit or cardigan: A layer for cooler evenings.
10% Accessories (1-2 items, plus shoes):
- Two necklaces: A simple one for day and a bolder piece for evening.
- Shoes: Wear your bulkiest pair (like trainers or boots) on the plane and pack one other versatile pair, such as a chic flat or a heeled boot.
By packing smart and following a simple formula, you can travel with a carry-on and still have a stylish, curated wardrobe for every part of your trip. Less luggage means more freedom—and more time to enjoy your adventure.
