I have always believed you can look stylish no matter what your age.

Good taste is timeless no matter what age you are. Yet as we get older, we often face a challenge of dressing in a way that is both stylish and age-appropriate.

Your personal style can help show that you're a man with direction and purpose

Here are my 5 Tips for men to look stylish as they mature

1. Target personal style, not trends

2. Invest in quality forever pieces

3. Wear more colour

4. Fit and proportions are important

5. Focus on finishing touches

1 Target Personal Style, not Trends

Let's be honest, by middle age, you’ve seen a lot of trends come and go out of style.

However, developing your personal style is more than following the latest fashion trends. It’s an opportunity to express your individuality and personality through your clothing.

Personal style is not just about finding what’s “right” for your body type or even trying to look more attractive, it’s about feeling good in whatever you choose to wear.

Having a personal style also helps sends signals that you're a personal with direction and purpose.

You feel more confident wearing a well put together outfit, and you can accomplish more when you look good and feel confident.

So, how do you find your personal style?

Understanding your personal style is a journey and one of the best ways to discover this is by working with an image and style consultant, such as myself.

For over 10 years I have been working clients in the East Midlands and internationally to discover their own personal style.

By reviewing your wardrobe preferences and dislikes, conducting a colour analysis to determine their best colors for their shades and by knowing your body type you can use clothing to highlight your best features.

2. Invest in Quality Forever pieces

We can all be guilty of making impulse purchases based on price alone and this can lead to a wardrobe full of items that either don't fit well anymore, colours  that you don’t actually like wearing, and clothes that didn’t necessarily fit well to begin with.

I would like you encourage you to think more about a sustainable style that lasts by focusing on the quality of your clothes as well as the fit.

Quality brands don't have to break the bank and there are a number of affordable options available. Better materials, better construction, and better design do cost more to make but you can find great fits and fabric on the highstreet if you know what to look for.

When shopping with clients I recommend taking the ‘3F technique’ into consideration:

  1. Fit - 90% of your style problems is about finding the right fit for your body. One thing to consider is that many brands have the same sizes stated but the cut and shape can differ considerably. A trick I use is to one in the size you think you are, one size up, one size down. It may take time to find the brands that suit your body shape but this trick will save you couple trips back to the changing rooms, and is a bit of insurance in case it's a new cut or your favourite brand have changed their sizing.
  2. Fabric - To understand good quality it’s important to get hands on. To help my clients I  organise shopping exploration visit. The idea is not to buy anything. But to walk around and feel the clothes. Maybe even try something on. Make mental note of how things fit, feel, and how you feel wearing it and notice the difference between natural and synthetic materials.

  3. Function - how will I be using this item, is it for work or the weekends. How will this item fit into my existing capsule wardrobe?

When I work with my clients we look to build in their existing clothes to make a ‘capsule wardrobe’. The idea is to reduce the number of clothing pieces you own but maximise the versatility and style of those items.

This means:

  • You always know what to wear

  • You get more outfits from fewer pieces of clothing

  • You never waste money on clothes you won't wear

3. Wear more colour

Colours allow men to express their unique personalities and style. Wearing different colours can help you stand out and show that you're not afraid to embrace your own fashion preferences.

A great place to begin is to discover the colours that best suit your colouring and make you appear most visible – visibility being important now that we’re frequently seen on screen.

With Colour Analysis we’ll find thirty colours to make your features look brighter and skin even, giving a healthier and more energised appearance.

4 Fit and proportions are important

Many man wear clothing that’s either too snug, or way too oversized. It could be that you’re wearing clothes that once fit (but don’t anymore), or you assume bigger clothes are more comfortable.

Whether you’re slim, a larger size, or somewhere in the middle, you need to buy clothes that fit your current proportions.

Clothes should allow you the freedom to move without being oversized. It’s a balance.

5. Focus on finishing touches that match your style.

Personal accessories can enhance your professional appearance in an office setting. Here are some accessories that can help you look more polished and put-together. Items that can bring out your personal style and can make a positive statement include, your watch, socks, pocket square and even
