Decluttering a wardrobe not only makes us feel more organised but helps save time as we can see the clothes we own and put together an outfit more easily.
We may find items we had forgotten and discover that more clothes work together than we realised. Overlooked items may combine with other separates we own, producing new outfits and giving variety to our wardrobes. As a bonus, fresh outfits from existing items mean that we don't have to keep splashing out on new clothes. I like to organise my wardrobe twice a year keeping my wardrobe tidy and the items I own fresh in my mind.
Below are my top tips for wardrobe decluttering:
- Go through each item hanging in your wardrobe and decide if it’s in good condition, does it fit, does the colour work with your other clothes and do you actually enjoy wearing it?
- Put any unwanted items in three piles: one to give away, one to donate to charity and another pile to sell on a site like eBay or with a shop selling pre-loved clothes
- Take items out of the wardrobe and put them in separate categories on the bed, eg tops, trousers, dresses, coats etc in their own piles
- Place each item on a good quality hanger, not those made of wire. Hangers with clips are great for trousers and skirts
- Return your clothes back to the wardrobe in their individual categories making items more visible
- Go through each piece of clothing and decide which other items it will combine with to produce an outfit. To help remember, why not photograph each outfit?
- Take an overview of the colours you wear and see where more colour could be injected with a bright new top or piece of jewellery
Being able to see your clothes in their different categories gives an overview of your items then you can decide on any gaps and where there is a need to purchase new items.
Once we have an organised wardrobe, we can move on to accessories and occasional wear.
Shoes
There’s nothing worse than being ready to go out and discovering that a shoe requires heeling, so go through all shoes and decide if they’re in good condition and put those aside that need repair.
Do our shoes/boots actually fit and do we enjoy wearing them or maybe they’re a little dated now? I store my shoes in boxes with a photo on the front keeping them dust-free and easy to find.
Jewellery
As with shoes, decide if an item is in good condition and if it works with our clothes. Amazon sells a variety of storage for jewellery which will keep your jewels organised and protected from becoming tangled.
Occasional wear
Evening dresses will take up a lot of room in our everyday wardrobes, therefore, place them in protective bags or suction bags and store elsewhere.
Holiday clothes
Holiday clothes are worn less frequently and you might like to store them in boxes along with sandals, holiday bags and jewellery. A box will slot under a bed or on top of a wardrobe or cupboard.
I think you'll begin to see that wardrobe decluttering is for good us and hope you'll feel the benefit and ease of having an organised closet with more outfits to wear!
